For the first time in over 125 years, our state has a flag designed to represent all Mississippians.
On Monday, Governor Tate Reeves signed House Bill 1 into law. A controversial chapter in our history is closed. We now have a flag symbolic of our state's reputation as "The Hospitality State."
MEC has strongly advocated for this change for two decades. To adopt the new flag as the official banner of our state and have it fly over the State Capitol grounds is a historic moment. More importantly, this moment shows we are truly looking ahead to a better future for our state and its citizens.
The change is a result of lengthy discussions, an unprecedented level of inclusive participation from citizens across the state, and the ability to work together for a better Mississippi. This new flag won't solve all of our problems, but it is a significant step forward. Our new flag's positive image will help recruit better jobs, increase the number of corporate expansions, and grow entrepreneurship.
MEC would like to thank Governor Tate Reeves, Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann, Speaker Philip Gunn, the Commission to Redesign the Mississippi Flag, and all of our legislative and community leaders from across the state who came together to make this change possible.
Our country has survived a difficult start to 2021. Many things divide us, but the nation can now look to Mississippi as a shining example of what can be accomplished by working toward a common goal. Moving forward under a unifying symbol is the first step in reaching our full potential.
