Leadership Mississippi recently completed its session on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, focusing on the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

After optional Wednesday activities at Lazy Magnolia Brewery and the Biloxi Shuckers game, the Leadership Mississippi Class of 2015 officially began its Gulf Coast session with a special session with Leadership Mississippi alumni former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour (class of 1977-1978).

Gov. Barbour signed copies of his new book America’s Great Storm for Leadership Mississippi participants and gave his perspective on the tragedy and recovery during the difficult event in a truly enlightening session.

The class took a tour of Ingalls Shipbuilding, Mississippi’s largest manufacturing employer, learning about the great work that employees do to produce and develop technologically advanced, highly capable warships for the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps, as well as products for foreign and commercial customers.

After the Ingalls tour, the class members were treated to a bus tour of the Mississippi Gulf Coast featuring local mayors Connie Moran of Oceans Springs, Jim Blevins of Pascagoula and Pass Christian Mayor Chipper McDermott.

Afterwards, in commemoration of the unity and passion shown by Mississippians toward each other after Hurricane Katrina, Leadership Mississippi was invited as special guests to a business after hours meeting at Hancock Bank. Just two months after Hurricane Katrina, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce held a business after hours in the shadow of Hancock Bank’s gutted corporate tower, and this reception was held by Hancock Bank with that same spirit of unity in mind. It was truly a special experience.

The Class of 2015 capped a great session on Friday with a special Leadership Session with Dr. Sam Jones, Vice President of Student Affairs at Jones County Junior College.
