Governor Outlines Strategy to Grow Healthcare Economy at Summit
Over 700 Leaders Attended Day-Long Event Focusing on Mississippi’s Future

Mississippi is pioneering new strategies in developing its healthcare economy, Gov. Phil Bryant shared with more than 700 people who attended the Governor’s Healthcare Economic Development Summit on August 15.
As part of the healthcare clustering strategy Gov. Bryant outlined last year in a report detailing his vision for growing Mississippi’s healthcare economy, the governor announced that communities around the state are developing healthcare zone master plans to guide healthcare investment and expansion at the local level. At the Summit, Gov. Bryant announced the certification of 12 communities master plans.
“The cooperation of private sector leaders and Mississippi’s elected officials is producing great opportunities for this state,” Gov. Bryant said. “Mississippi is unique in its approach to applying healthcare zones and clustering to economic development, and today I am proud to announce 12 communities have been certified through the Mississippi Development Authority as certified Healthcare Zone Master Plan Communities.”

Gov. Phil Bryant Outlines Goals as Study Unveiled at Meetings in Biloxi, Tupelo & Jackson
Expanding the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and adding 1,000 physicians to the state’s workforce are part of Gov. Phil Bryant’s vision for strengthening Mississippi’s economy by investing in healthcare.
During three meetings today, Friday, Oct. 26, Gov. Bryant is outlining his vision for growing the state’s healthcare economy and unveiling the findings of a new Blueprint Mississippi healthcare study. Bryant announced a funding award toward the expansion of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. The first meeting was held in Biloxi at 7:30 a.m. Meetings are planned for Tupelo at 11:30 a.m. and Jackson at 3:30 p.m. today.
“I am pleased to announce that the Mississippi Development Authority will award $10 million in Community Development Block Grant funds to UMMC to aid in the expansion of its School of Medicine,” Bryant said. “Mississippi needs more physicians, and we cannot wait any longer.”
Bryant is encouraging new development in the state’s larger medical regions through the Mississippi Healthcare Industry Zone Act. The legislation, part of Bryant’s ‘Mississippi Works’ agenda, became law this year and provides incentives to certain health care-related businesses that locate in a certified healthcare zone.

Blueprint Mississippi 2011 Full Report
Blueprint Mississippi was an extensive one-year, $1.25 million research project focusing on 12 Blueprint States (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas). The report looks at how Mississippi compares with the Blueprint States and how the state can better position itself for progress. The goals for Blueprint Mississippi are:
- Improve Communication and Coordination among Public, Private and Non-profit Leaders
- Support Mississippi’s Creative Economy
- Cultivate Diversity, Community Cooperation and Racial Reconciliation
- Strengthen and Expand Mississippi’s Economy
- Increase the Educational Achievement Level of Mississippians
- Increase Availability of Financial Capital
- Promote Healthcare as an Economic Driver
- Continually Develop the Infrastructure for a Competitive Economy and
- Cultivate a More Robust Workforce in Mississippi
