Leeanna Hodges, 2013 Pike County Mississippi Scholar, North Pike High School

Leeanna will be attending Southwest Mississippi Community College in the fall.

What made you decide to become a MS Scholar?
“When I was a sophomore, we had an assembly concerning how to become a MS scholar. I decided to become one when my peers and I were told that these were the courses that would best prepare us for college.”

How did the Scholars program impact your course selection?
“I had already decided to take many of the required courses prior to learning about the scholars program. However, the scholars program did motivate me to take my second class of foreign language which I had not previously planned to do. Afterwards though, I was pleased with my decision to take the class.

What has been your most rewarding experience?
“My most rewarding experience was the night of the MS Scholars dinner when I stood at the front of the church with the other North Pike seniors while we were all laughing and smiling was not only a rewarding experience, but a moment I will not soon forget.”

Challenges?
“The biggest challenge for me was pushing myself to wake up earlier to squeeze in that extra study time which made all the difference in the end.”

Myka Barnes, 2013 Pike County Mississippi Scholar, McComb High School

Myka will be attending The University of Mississippi in the fall.

What made you decide to become a MS Scholar?
“I decided to become a MS Scholar when I realized that most of the classes I had to take to be a part of the program where college prep classes and would benefit me in the long run.”

How did the Scholars program impact your course selection?
“It impacted my course selection tremendously, especially when I was a sophomore taking classes with seniors.”

What has been your most rewarding experience?
“The most rewarding experience from the program was getting to wear a medallion during graduation, representing all of the hard work that finally paid off and also getting to list the program on my education resume.”

Challenges?
“The biggest challenge about the program was within yourself – to choose to study outside of the class or not to. The program is optional so nothing is really forced upon you. It’s up to you to ask your counselor if you can add the rigorous classes to your schedule.”
