Event Gets Under Way at 9 a.m. at Jackson Convention Complex

Governor Phil Bryant will host the Governor’s Health Care Economic Development Summit Thursday, August 15 at the Jackson Convention Complex.

This event, which will focus on the objectives of the Blueprint Mississippi Health Care: An Economic Driver report, is co-hosted by the Mississippi Economic Council, Mississippi Economic Development Council, Mississippi State Medical Association, Mississippi Hospital Association, the Mississippi Municipal League and the Mississippi Partnership for Economic Development.

Governor Bryant will open the program at 9 a.m. along with Dr. Clay Hays, Jr., who is serving as chair of the Mississippi Health Care Solutions Institute. Hays – a noted Jackson cardiologist from Jackson Heart Clinic – was named by Bryant to lead the institute, which was formed as a recommendation of the Blueprint Mississippi Health Care report.

“Mississippi’s health care industry will drive our state’s economic future—particularly if we continue pursuing the strategies outlined in the Blueprint Mississippi health care report,” Governor Phil Bryant said. “From increasing the number of physicians in Mississippi to supporting cutting-edge medical developments and helping communities develop health care-focused master plans, cultivating this vital industry will generate numerous benefits for our citizens and our economy.”

Featured speakers for the event will be Robert Hess, Richard E. Wainerdi, Ph.D. and Hannah Gay, M.D.

Hess is an executive managing director in Newmark Grubb Knight Frank’s Global Corporate Services practice and is responsible for strategy development, quality assurance and business development for its consulting and industry/specialty group initiatives. He is a preeminent, sought-after service provider and respected leader in corporate location strategy and site selection across multiple industries and asset types in North America. He has conducted over 250 assignments on a global basis, including major CAPX projects in Asia, Europe, and Mexico.
Dr. Richard E. Wainerdi is president emeritus of Texas Medical Center and served as president and CEO from 1984 through 2012. During his tenure at Texas Medical Center, the campus increased dramatically by almost any measurement including number of acres, patient count, employees and student enrollment, the physical plant and in the amount of money awarded in research grants to the institutions. His leadership was one of successful coordination for a 54 member institution campus by encouraging collaboration.
Dr. Hannah Gay is associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and a certified HIV specialist. TIME Magazine named her to its 2013 list of 100 Most Influential People in the World after she gained international attention at an infectious diseases conference presenting a report on the “Mississippi Baby.” The report detailed how Dr. Gay administered an early and aggressive treatment regimen to a newborn infected with HIV, which functionally cured the child.

The morning sessions will provide a national perspective on economic development within the health care industry, as well as take a look at key Mississippi successes.

The National Perspectives session panelists are:

Stephen B. Coulston, AIA, is president and managing principal of Broaddus Planning in Texas. A licensed architect, he holds a professional degree in architecture from Texas Tech University. He has focused his entire professional career of more than two decades on planning projects for institutional, government, and higher education and private sector clients.
Brad Guest is a partner and co-founder of Subsidium Healthcare. He has approximately 20 years of experience in health care consulting and senior management. Throughout his consulting career, Brad has managed critical strategy and business development projects for multi-hospital health systems clients including the management of market and financial analyses and collaboration with both client senior management and physician leaders.
Malcolm Portera, Ph.D. is chancellor emeritus of the University of Alabama System. He has served for 10 years on the UAB Health System Board and member of the Board’s Executive Committee. Portera is presently serving in the lead role in developing the Global Alliance for Innovation involving the U.S., India, Italy, Argentina, and South Korea. He has also served in an advisory role to South Korean President Park in her efforts to develop the Creative Economy for that country.

The Mississippi Successes session panelists are:

Dr. Richard deShazo is a Billy S. Guyton Distinguished Professor of medicine and pediatrics at The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). Dr. deShazo has served on the American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Allergy and Immunology, American Board of Medical Specialists and as president of the Association of Professors of Medicine.
Edmond E. Hughes is vice president of Human Resources and Administration for Ingalls Shipbuilding. Since 2006, Hughes has led all aspects of the human resources function related to the attraction, development and retention of the workforce. He serves on the board of directors of Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Gulf Coast Business Council and Jobs for Mississippi Graduates.
Dr. James M. Turner is dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine and a professor of medicine at William Carey University. He has worked as an Osteopathic Family Physician and Emergency Physician in Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina and West Virginia. He currently serves on the board of directors for the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Medicine.
Gerald D. Wages is a retired executive vice president of North Mississippi Health Services, Inc. Following his initial retirement in January, 2012, he continues to serve the organization as vice president for External Affairs. Wages has served in many capacities under the NMHS umbrella, including interim president, chief operating officer, executive vice president, finance, vice president for Corporate Services and CFO.

All industries will benefit from a special bonus session ‘Economic Development Magnifier’ at 2 p.m. Governor Bryant will formally certify Health Care Zone Master Planned Communities in Mississippi as part of the economic development magnifier session.
